Fall Season Ends with League Titles

As the school year moves into November, fall sports finish and make way for the winter season. Oaks Christian athletics had an extremely strong fall season, highlighted by three Marmonte League champion teams.

Girls’ Volleyball

The girls’ volleyball team won their third straight Marmonte League championship this year, again going a perfect 10-0 in league play, dropping just one set throughout the entire league schedule. Outside of league competition, the Lions were 11-10, highlighted by a 3-1 CIF-SS playoff win over South Pasadena. The Lions fell in the quarterfinals to Redondo Union before advancing to the CIF-State regional playoffs. In the regionals, the Lions faced off against Palos Verdes, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead before the hosts came back to win the next three games.

The girls’ golf team won its fourth straight Marmonte League championship this year, dominating Marmonte League competition. The Lions took first place in every single tournament, and in the overall scoring, won by 98 strokes. The Lions then advanced to the CIF-Division 1 championships at Los Serranos Golf Course. The team took 13 th place, which came up just short of advancing. Junior Sunny Wang advanced to the Individual CIF Finals/SCGA qualifier, shooting a 76, which was enough for her to advance to the SCGA Southern State championship. At the championship, she shot a four-over 78, which was a tie for 47 th , ending her season.

Girls’ Tennis

The girls’ tennis team had its best season since 2003 this year, reaching the CIF-SS Division 3 semifinals. After starting the year with two straight wins, the Lions finished the non-league season with a 3-1 record. The team then moved into Marmonte League play, and went 5-5, which was good enough for a spot in the CIF playoffs. During the Marmonte League finals, freshman Ellie Lin took second place, which qualified her for the CIF Individual Sectionals, the first time a Lion has qualified for the Individual Championship in the program’s history. During the CIF Playoffs, the Lions got hot, winning three straight matches 10-8 against West Torrance, Xavier Prep and Marymount before falling in the semifinals to Culver City, again by the score of 10-8.

Boys’ Water Polo

The boys’ water polo team won its seventh-straight Marmonte League title, going 21-7 across all competitions. The Lions also reached the CIF-SS Open Division tournament for the second year in a row. Wins over Corona del Mar early in the season and Huntington Beach late in the season highlighted the campaign, which ended with a 9-8 overtime loss in the Open Division quarterfinals against Corona del Mar.

The Oaks Christian football team won its 12 th all-time Marmonte Legue title and first since 2018 this year. After going 3-2 in nonleague competition, the Lions went undefeated in Marmonte League play, capped off by a 13-10 victory over rival St. Bonaventure to capture the championship. The Lions then defeated Chaparral High School in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs before falling 39-14 in the second round to Mission Viejo.

Cross-Country

The Cross-Country program had another banner year, with the girls winning the Marmonte League championship for the first time since 2005. Star senior Payton Godsey won her second straight Marmonte League individual title, leading the Lions to the title. The team is currently still in competition, competing in the Southern Section prelims.
